Part 1: Why Sierra Leonean Businesses Collect Customer Data But Never Use It

Most businesses in Sierra Leone collect customer data every day. Phone numbers. Purchase history. Names. Locations.

Almost none of them use it.

I saw this firsthand during my Master's research. I studied a telecom company in Sierra Leone — Orange. They had a loyalty program. Points. Rewards. A mobile app. On paper, it looked solid.

But their CRM system did not talk to their mobile money platform.

Customers used Orange Money every day. The loyalty program never saw it. The company could not reward its best customers because its own systems were blind to each other.

That is the problem with most CRM in Sierra Leone. Companies collect data. They store it. They protect it. But they never connect it.

The data sits in one system. The customer history sits in another. The mobile money transactions live somewhere else entirely. Nothing talks to nothing.

And here is what happens next.

A customer who uses five services looks exactly the same as a customer who uses one. A customer about to leave looks exactly the same as a loyal one.

The company has all the information it needs. It just never put it together.

CRM is not software you buy. It is the decision to actually know your customers. Which ones are staying. Which ones are leaving. What they need before they ask for it.

The answers are already in the data. Most businesses just never built the bridge to reach them.

And if Sierra Leonean companies do not learn to do this, someone else will. Foreign platforms already know our customers better than local businesses ever will.

That is not a technology gap. That is a decision gap.
