The Data Your Business Is Already Sitting On

In Part 1, I talked about something I saw during my Master's research.

Businesses can have a lot of customer data and still know very little about their customers. Why? Because the information is often sitting in different places.

Think about a normal business.

A customer gives you their phone number. You have their name. They buy something from you. You record the sale. They pay through mobile money. You receive the payment. Later, they message you on WhatsApp. You reply.

All of this is information about the same customer.

But in many businesses, these things are not connected.

The phone number is in one place. The sales record is somewhere else. The mobile money transaction is somewhere else. The WhatsApp conversation is on someone's phone.

So when the business looks at the customer, it only sees pieces.

And this creates a problem.

Imagine a customer who has been buying from you every two weeks for the past year. Then they suddenly stop.

If you only look at today's sales, you may not notice.

But if you can see their history, you might realise: something changed.

Maybe they found another business. Maybe your prices became too high. Maybe they were unhappy with their last experience. Maybe they simply forgot about you.

You don't know yet. But at least you know there is something worth looking into.

That is the difference between having data and using data.

The same thing happens with your best customers.

One customer might buy one product from you once a month. Another might buy five different products, refer other people, and come back every week.

If your systems don't connect the information, both customers can look almost the same on paper.

You miss the difference. And that is where a lot of businesses lose opportunities.

Your customer data should help you answer simple questions: Who are my best customers? Who is buying less than before? Who has stopped buying? What do my customers usually buy? How often do they come back? What can I do to keep them?

You don't necessarily need expensive CRM software to start answering these questions. Sometimes the first step is simply getting the information you already have into one place and keeping it properly.

Because the goal is not to collect more and more data. The goal is to make the data you already have useful.

And this is something I think more businesses in Sierra Leone need to start taking seriously.

Your customer is already giving you information through every purchase, payment, message and interaction.

The question is: are you paying attention?

Part 3: What actually happens when your sales system, customer records, WhatsApp and payment data don't talk to each other? That is where the problem becomes much bigger.
